pass 3 · 2026-08-21
Scenario. One program at one school. Two sections are split:
Sec 001 – Rivera (Blue Table → Period 1, Green Table → Period 2 ·
Group A) and Sec 002 – Hale. A split section’s own chip never
appears — only its subsection chips do. Sec 003 – Choi is a normal
chip on Period 2 · Group B; a Reading group and a 30-student ELA section
wait in the bank. Two students in Sec 001 are in no subsection yet —
that is what the footer control points at.
What changed in pass 3 (2026-08-21)
- The board is shown as the modal it really is, over a dimmed
stand-in of the program-setup page — so opening the split editor
shows the real modal-on-modal stacking (the board stays visible,
dimmed, around the inset editor card).
- The split editor is now the canonical one from split-editor.html,
embedded verbatim (EDITOR-CORE blocks) — same modal card, roster tabs,
bulk “Move to ▾”, guarded deletes, unsplit = deleting the last
subsection. Done applies changes back to this board; Cancel or
clicking the scrim discards them.
- Copy audit: wherever the shipped period-mapping board already has
a string for the same job, this page now uses it word-for-word — the
footer count (“3 periods · 5 sections (2 unassigned)”), the bank’s
empty states and “Unassign the lifted section”, the lift bar, tile and
group drag hints, “+ Add Period”, and the chip ⋯ menu (“Move to
group”, “Add to another period”, “No other periods yet”).
- Everything violet is prototype chrome, not proposed UI: this panel
(docked outside the board), the inert school-filter stand-in, and
prototype toasts. Net-new subsection copy — the footer split-sections
control, its popover, chip lineage — stays in normal dash styling:
that is the proposal.
Real vs simulated
- Real: the board, chips, search, drag and click-to-place, the whole
editor loop, and all non-violet wording. Nothing is saved — reload
resets.
- Simulated: sync, bell, and the unplaced-students toggle are demo
controls. The school filter is a stand-in; class lists come from the
SIS and are never edited here.
- Try the aha-moment: ⋯ on the 30-student ELA chip → “Split
section…” → move students into subsections → Done, and watch the
chips transform in the bank.
Questions for review
- With real long section names, do subsection chips still read as
“part of a section” at a glance? Which glyph + lineage option holds
up?
- Search highlights matches and dims the rest, across the bank and
the periods. Right model? Should searching a section’s name also light
up its subsections (it does here)?
- Footer: the shipped “(N unassigned)” count now sits next to the
proposed split-sections control — which quiet and attention wordings
read best beside it?
- The editor opens as its own modal over this board (the same card
as split-editor.html). Right presentation, or should it take over the
board modal’s body instead?
- Deleting the last subsection is how you un-split a section.
Clear, or does it need its own button?
